Beginning therapy can bring up a lot of mixed feelings.
My goal is to make you as comfortable as possible during the session. The first several minutes are spent going over the therapy process, informed consent and other “housekeeping” type items.
The rest of the session will focus on discussing your answers to the intake packet and what brings you in. As we meet I will be noting your goals which we will review at the end of the session.
This varies from person to person and session to session!
A lot of people find it is helpful to process the previous week including work related issues, family/friends, current symptoms or negative behaviors.
Sometimes it is helpful to dive into the past whether it be a past romantic relationship, family dynamics or memories from school or childhood.
I am here to help guide and collaborate with you around what would be most useful for our time together as we clarify your goals.
Absolutely not!
My style is very collaborative and I value the therapeutic relationship and alliance.
Depending on what brings you in, some sessions may be process heavy – meaning we spend the session diving into specific situations and what feelings, thoughts, assumptions come up for you.
Other sessions may be more skills heavy – meaning we discuss how negative thinking patterns may be contributing to depression or anxiety and what to do about them.
Sessions are typically 50-53 minutes.
For many, medication is not needed.
However, there are times when it may be helpful. I can help you determine whether or not an evaluation from a doctor would be beneficial. If you decide to have an evaluation, we can then discuss your doctor’s recommendation together.
If you don’t have a doctor, I can provide you with a referral.
